Speed sensors

Istec has a wide range of speed sensors for speed measurements. By offering both hardware and flexible service, we offer the most complete solutions for reliable speed measurements.

Why speed sensors from Istec?

The reliability of a speed measurement is essential and depends on various factors. Based on decades of experience with speed measurements, we help customers choose and implement the right sensors. Thanks to intensive cooperation with suppliers and a comprehensive stock management of sensors, we are able to achieve short delivery times.

Speed sensors

Our range includes the three most commonly used measuring methods for speed measurements. Depending on various factors, we decide which sensor type is the most suitable solution for an application.

  • Hall sensors
A Hall sensor is the most commonly used sensor for speed measurements. The output of these sensors is a square wave, as a result of which they suffer considerably less interference with the signal and the measurement has very high reliability. In addition, Hall effect sensors have a large speed range and can be used effectively for zero-speed detection and rotation direction detection.
  • Electromagnetic (VR) sensors
Electromagnetic sensors have the strong property of being able to withstand high ambient temperatures. A disadvantage, however, is that minimum speed is required for these sensors to generate a usable signal and they are quickly affected by interference with the signal.
  • Eddy current sensors
    • Signal transmission: voltage
Three-wire connection – maximum cable length 300 metres.
    • Signal transmission: current
Two-wire connection – maximum cable length 1000+ metres.
A major advantage of the two-wire version is that no separate power line is required for the sensor to work. As a result, standard cables can be used and the cables can be very long without affecting the measurement.

A disadvantage of the eddy current measuring principle can be that at high speeds due to saturation, the measurement signal becomes a straight line, making the measurement unreliable. This is countered by prior validation of the application.

Main distributor Jaquet speed sensors in EMEA

TE Connectivity has appointed Istec as main distibutor in Europe, the Middle-East, and Africa (EMEA) for the Jaquet speed sensor products.

Spindle solutions

The most used sensor that Istec uses is the DSF-1210SHV (Ex-ATEX) from Jaquet; a Hall-effect speed sensor with M12 x 1 thread.  When a sensor needs to be replaced that has a larger diameter than M12, the mounting with a spindle can be made suitable for the sensor with M12.

There are other reasons for opting for a spindle solution, for example, for creating a phase shift to enable rotation direction determination. A spindle also ensures more accurate sensor positioning and simplifies the disassembly and assembly of the sensors, thereby reducing the risk of damage.

Turnaround service

During a turnaround, the Istec specialists can offer service for speed sensors. The sensors are disassembled, inspected and, if necessary, replaced.
