Vibration monitoring for SIL 2 applications

To achieve SIL 2 certification, the transmitter has been evaluated based on the IEC61508 standard – Safety Instruments (SI). The ST5484E can therefore be used in compliance with IEC61511 – Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and is applicable as a safety instrument to shut down machinery when exposed to excessive vibrations. The certification allows for the determination of the achieved safety level. Shutdown thresholds can be set in consultation with machine manufacturers or derived from ISO10816, the vibration standard for rotating machinery.

ST5484E specifications

The transmitter incorporates a piezoelectric accelerometer, signal integrator, RMS peak detector, and a 4-20 mA signal converter in a single housing. The transmitter is mounted directly onto the machine housing or bearing housing and provides a 4-20 mA output signal without the need for an additional signal conditioner. This allows the transmitter to be directly connected to an Emergency Shutdown System (ESD) for safety applications, in compliance with IEC 61511, or to a PLC, DCS, or SCADA system for monitoring and alarm functions.

Configuration

• The transmitter can be fully configured at the time of ordering, with options including:
• Two-wire configuration (4-20 mA) or four-wire configuration (4-20 mA + raw signal)
• 4-20 mA output signal can be ordered as full scale (4 mA = no vibration, 20 mA = full-scale vibration)
• ATEX certification
• Various low- and high-pass filters for accurate frequency band determination
• IP66/IP67 protection ratings
